Why being unconscious is bad for you

I just took my usual cold shower in the morning when I had this idea. I thought about people that unconsciously live their days. And I’m not necessarily talking about repetitive tasks or habits. If you clean your teeth every evening before going to bed, this is a thing that you don’t think about (probably). So it already became a natural habit for you to do this regularly. I heard that our brain does this to become more effective, since you don’t have to decide whether you clean your teeth or not. It also saves you energy which you can invest in more important or heavier tasks.

The thing that specifically came into my mind was human’s fear against cold temperatures. Some would say that it is a comfort zone so that a warm weather is good and cold is bad. You turn on the heater in the house so you feel warm and comfortable in your environment. I think that is not necessarily bad. Don’t get me wrong, I also like warm weather and sunshine. But sometimes, it is good to feel the contrast. Without cold, there would be no warm — without warmness, there is not coldness. You cannot freeze without ever feeling heat.

As soon as it gets cold outside, people get soft. They turn on their heater and use a scarf as soon as they feel uncomfortable or think they get sick. Heaters are a good invention, but why should you turn them to summer temperatures, when it’s winter outside? I think if people should be more conscious about what they do day to day — because that is the first step to change something. How can you change a habit that you are not conscious about?
